Background of the Study

Job satisfaction is a critical factor influencing the performance, retention, and overall well-being of nurses. It encompasses various aspects such as work environment, salary, workload, professional growth opportunities, and administrative support (Maslach & Leiter, 2024). Studies have shown that job satisfaction is directly linked to quality of patient care, nurse retention, and hospital efficiency (Ogunleye & Bello, 2023).

At University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, nurses face significant challenges, including high patient loads, inadequate staffing, and limited career advancement opportunities. These factors may contribute to job dissatisfaction, increased turnover rates, and decreased work efficiency (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). The ongoing economic and healthcare crises in Nigeria further exacerbate the situation, making it imperative to assess job satisfaction levels among nurses (WHO, 2024).

Despite extensive global research on job satisfaction among nurses, there is limited empirical evidence specific to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. This study aims to assess the determinants of job satisfaction among nurses in this institution and provide recommendations for improving their work conditions.

Statement of the Problem

Job dissatisfaction among nurses has been identified as a major cause of increased burnout, high turnover rates, and decreased patient care quality (Adebayo & Okeke, 2024). Factors such as poor remuneration, lack of professional recognition, and limited opportunities for career advancement contribute to dissatisfaction (Okon & Yusuf, 2023).

At University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, nurses often work under stressful conditions, facing excessive workload and limited administrative support. If left unaddressed, low job satisfaction may lead to decreased nurse retention, reduced productivity, and negative patient outcomes (Ibrahim & Adekunle, 2024). Given the importance of nurse satisfaction in maintaining healthcare quality, it is essential to assess the factors influencing job satisfaction among nurses at this institution.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of job satisfaction among nurses at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

2. To identify factors influencing job satisfaction among nurses in the institution.

3. To examine the impact of job satisfaction on nurse retention and patient care.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of job satisfaction among nurses at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital?

2. What are the key factors influencing job satisfaction among nurses?

3. How does job satisfaction impact nurse retention and patient care quality?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital experience moderate to low job satisfaction.

2. Poor remuneration, high workload, and limited career advancement opportunities significantly contribute to job dissatisfaction.

3. Increased job satisfaction leads to improved nurse retention and better patient care outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on job satisfaction among nurses at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. It does not examine other healthcare professionals or institutions. Limitations may include reluctance of nurses to disclose dissatisfaction due to fear of repercussions and potential bias in self-reported job satisfaction levels.
